Charities Championship 2008
Langwith lakes April 26th

Above: Midge gives Dirk his £1
Side-Bet you can just see the tear in Midges eye.
05:00 the alarm went off, I must be
mad I told myself as I strapped on my leg and headed down stairs.
But was I excited? Well yes! Just a bit, after not wetting a line
for over seven months I was gagging to get back out there again
and have a play.
First mission was to drop the Mrs
off at work “Have a nice day" I said as she got out the car,
couldn't hear her reply :) O bless we'll both be enjoying our
selves today then :)
I was going to have to make a
detour to pick up Roger from Birmingham so onto the M6 head for
spaghetti junction. On my arrival I was welcomed with a cuppa
and a big smile, he wasn't pleased to see me apparently it was
just wind I was informed :) right then car was loaded up,
Including Rogers tea making kit, anyone who knows Roger will know
he's partial to a cuppa or 30. Back on the road, down the M6 and
across on the M42 and up the M1to York. The TomTom got us all the
way to the A1 and thought lets take the lads across country for 20
miles, lets tease them show them a cracking Indian takeaway but go
a different root on the way back so they can't have one. So it
was a petrol station coffee and a Ginsters chicken curry pie for
us. The closest to a Saturday night Indian as we were going to
get.
We finally got to the venue after
having to turn round and go back to a bakery for directions and
breakfast, the post code lasted for about 2 miles apparently? as
it turned out it was worth getting lost the pie from the bakery
was spot on. We arrived at the fishery 10 minutes late but good
old Andrew Archer was waiting for us and told us that everyone
gets lost coming here. Andrew had already drawn for us both and
told poor Roger he was on a flyer, peg 2 no pressure there then
and I was on a crap one peg 10 but you'll catch I was told.
That's all I wanted to do was catch a fish, and when I did I gave
it a big kiss and wondered how I was going to clean my hands and
face? Must remember a towel next time, Ahh! Fish had it been that
long? Well yes!
There was the usual pre-match
banter Midge came round talking to me to stop me from setting up,
his tactics to beat me was a bit serious as there was a £1.00 side
bet taking place, the challenge had been thrown down on Maggot
drowning several days before but from the photo above you can see
that his stall tactics didn't work "sorry Midge"
Whistle blew at 11:00 and this was
to be a six hour match so no rush, and good job because I still
wasn't ready, the info I had was to fish the far bank so I set
two rigs up for across and one for down the track just in case
things got hard. Within 20 minutes I was in to my first carp the
black hydro came shooting out what does that mean? it was a fish
of around 3Ibs good start. I then had another but
smaller, I couldn't remember ever being this good :) I had a run
of 4 or 5 fish losing another 4 and estimated I had around 9Ibs. I
was in front of the guy on my left Mr Archer and for a time the
guy on my right until he started catching lumps later on. I then I
heard dirk look out it's after your pram :)

"He's after your pram"
He certainly
looked excited about something but it was a lady peacock and not
my pram "thanks Andrew" another Yorkshire tactic they
had used Midge now it was time for more fowl play :)
The last hour
proved to be the most productive for most competitors with several
lumps being netted, don't you just love it when you keep hearing
the words of the next peg "it's another good-un lad" :(
The whistle
blew, I had caught a few fish and it hadn't rained a perfect day
out, I couldn't have asked for any better.
This was the
third year Andrew had run a match for the Charities championships
and once again he boosted the pools money out of his own pocket to
the sum of £50 and donated another £50 to the charity thanks mate
your a star.
Roger did the
prize giving, handing out some very smart certificates he had
designed and printed off. and didn't he look smart in the danglers
new red designer gear with our new logo on one breast and our
Sponsors name `Woodford Plant Hire' embroidered on the other
breast.
